Separate autonomy from ownership

An employee role may provide payroll, benefits, office support, and an established operating environment. An independent affiliation may offer more business control while leaving more expenses with the advisor. An RIA owner also takes responsibility for running a regulated business. Those are broad models; contracts determine the actual arrangement.

Compare the work behind the model

Make a list of what your practice needs each week: trading, planning, billing, marketing review, client service, technology, and supervision. For each firm, identify what is included, what costs extra, and what you must supply. A higher headline payout can coexist with much higher overhead.

Test the fit with real questions

Ask for demonstrations using anonymized examples of your normal workflow. Ask who owns the client relationship and brand, how a future sale would work, and what happens if you leave. Keep records and client information within your existing authorization while you explore.
